SUMMARY:The Michigan Justice for Children Conference
DESCRIPTION:Russell Strand will deliver:\nPlenary I: My Journey from Law Enforcement to Victim Advocacy to Prevention … and Beyond: Lessons Learned \nWorking within the criminal justice system can often be challenging to say least and demoralizing and potentially harmful to say the most. Our individual and collect journeys matter. We don’t have to walk alone – we are literally here to support\, guide\, and care for each other – regardless of the profession or professions we chose.  Join us for a transformative presentation\, where the presenter will share deeply personal stories of abuse and triumph with the goal of inspiring and connecting with attendees on a profound level. This journey\, although personal\, will encourage attendees to reflect on their own journeys\, challenges\, triumphs\, and hope. Through this presentation\, participants will learn to recognize the importance of empathy\, compassion\, and understanding in victim advocacy\, understand the challenges faced in law enforcement investigations\, and discover strategies for effective prevention efforts. By the end of the session\, attendees will be able to more fully empathize with survivors of abuse\, identify key strategies for supporting victims\, and develop a deeper understanding of the interconnected roles of law enforcement\, advocacy\, and prevention in creating safer communities and a better world. \nMyra Strand will deliver:\nAiming for Safety: Trauma-Informed Harm Reduction\, Risk Assessment and Safety Planning \nThis workshop will provide advocates and allied professionals with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in trauma-informed and healing- centered: harm reduction\, risk assessment\, and safety planning. \nEmphasizing self-efficacy and self-determination\, this training will highlight the importance of an intersectional approach when working with trauma-impacted individuals\, paying particular attention to vulnerable and/or rural populations as they experience higher victimization rates. \nThe presenter will also discuss various risk assessment tools and lethality indicators. She will then help participants to use these tools while working with clients to create a comprehensive plan to navigate and/or reduce harm in potentially dangerous situations. \nParticipants will learn how to create a tailored safety plan based on the individual needs of each client. There will be a special emphasis on the importance of safe exit planning- as this is a matter of life and death for many. \nRussell Strand will deliver:\nComprehensive Integrated Primary Prevention – It’s a Brave New World! \nIn this presentation\, we will delve into the concept of integrated primary prevention of harmful behaviors\, with a specific focus on interpersonal violence\, sexual assault\, and self-harm. We will explore the theoretical foundations and practical applications of this approach within the context of the criminal justice system. We will begin by introducing the Social-Ecological Model (SEM) developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We will examine how the SEM provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the factors that contribute to harmful behaviors\, emphasizing the importance of addressing multiple levels of influence\, including individual\, relationship\,community\, and societal factors. Next\, we will explore the Broken Windows Theory\, which proposes that visible signs of disorder and neglect in a community can contribute to an environment that fosters crime and harmful behaviors. We will discuss the implications of this theory for prevention strategies within the criminal justice system and examine how addressing minor infractions and maintaining community order can have a significant impact on reducing more serious crimes. \nClick here to register:\nhttps://web.cvent.com/event/84323041-f2f6-45cf-9aca-3e2ca08ed917/summary

SUMMARY:Voices of Survival: Understanding the Criminalization of Domestic Violence
DESCRIPTION:“This maybe the most important book about domestic violence written in our time. Michelle writes about their experiences with the Criminal Justice system through an outside perspective. Taking a step out and looking in really changes the view. We cannot simply shrug and say “that is the way it is”. We have to change and do better.”\n-Myra Strand \n  \nVoices of Survival: Understanding the Criminalization of Domestic Violence Survivors \nJoin us for an impactful day-long training featuring Michelle Horton\, author of “Dear Sister: A Memoir of Secrets\, Survival\, and Unbreakable Bonds.” This event will delve into the harrowing case of her sister\, Nikki Addimando\, who endured extreme domestic violence and ultimately killed her husband in self-defense. \nMichelle will share her personal journey and analyze the myriad ways the criminal justice system failed to apply common sense and logic in Nikki’s case. Attendees will gain insight into the systemic shortcomings that often exacerbate the trauma experienced by survivors. \nFollowing Michelle’s presentation\, Russell Strand will approach the case from a human-centric investigations and prosecutions perspective. He will highlight critical moments where a trauma-informed lens could have significantly altered the outcome for Nikki and others like her. \nNext\, Myra Strand will delve into the topic of poly-victimization\, shedding light on its complexities. In addition\, she will highlight lethality indicators and harm reduction strategies\, providing a comprehensive understanding of the risks victims face. She will then present practical safety planning strategies designed to prevent future tragedies. Her insights will equip responders with essential tools to effectively support and protect victims of domestic violence. Myra will conclude her discussion by addressing the dangers involved in exit planning. \nThis training is designed to be multidisciplinary\, making it essential for all responders\, especially child protection and child advocacy workers\, who engage with victims of crime. \nBy understanding the complexities of this case and the broader implications for survivors\, participants will enhance their skills in advocacy\, intervention\, and support\, ultimately fostering a more informed and compassionate approach. \nWe often hear: “this is just the way it is”. The thing is… it does not have to be that way.\nNikki and Michelle are so graciously allowing us to learn from their experiences. That gift is precious because it comes at great personal cost. We have to do better. \nMichelle will be available to answer questions\, ensuring a dynamic and interactive learning experience. Join us in this vital conversation to better serve those affected by domestic violence and to advocate for systemic change. \nTrainers:  Michelle Horton\, Russell Strand and Myra Strand \n  \nVisit Michelles website and Buy a Book!\n  \nREGISTER TODAY:  CLICK HERE\n
