This neurochemical response can create an addictive cycle: as users seek the same pleasurable feelings, they may require more extreme content to achieve the same level of satisfaction.

Over time, excessive pornography use can lead to desensitization. Users become accustomed to increasingly graphic or violent content, diminishing their ability to experience sexual arousal from typical stimuli. This neurobiological transformation can alter sexual preferences and expectations, potentially leading to unhealthy or abusive behaviors in real-life sexual interactions.

Excessive Pornography Use and Predatory Behavior

Research indicates a troubling relationship between excessive pornography consumption and predatory and abusive behavior. Studies have shown that individuals who frequently consume violent or degrading pornography are more likely to exhibit attitudes and behaviors consistent with sexual aggression and abuse. This is particularly concerning when considering the formative years of youth who, exposed to such content, may normalize violence as part of sexual expression.  We hypothesize that this may be one of the contributing factors to the concerning rise of child on child sexual violence.

Moreover, the integration of violence within pornography often desensitizes viewers to aggression, making them less empathetic to the suffering of others. This can lead to a distorted view of consent and the dynamics of power in sexual relationships.

Pornography and Sex Trafficking

The intersection of pornography and sex trafficking is a critical area of concern for criminal justice professionals. The demand for pornography fuels an underground economy where vulnerable individuals, particularly women and children, are exploited for sexual purposes. Child Sexual Exploitation Material (CSEM) often finds its way into the mainstream pornography industry, blurring the lines between consensual adult content and criminal exploitation.

The production and distribution of such material perpetuate cycles of abuse and exploitation, as traffickers and abusers can utilize pornography as a tool to groom and manipulate victims. They also use the videos to advertise the humans that they

are selling. The normalization of such content can further desensitize the public to the realities of trafficking and exploitation, making it imperative for professionals to understand and address these issues.

The Role of Strangulation in Pornography

Strangulation has become a disturbing trend within certain segments of pornography, often depicted as a form of eroticism. This portrayal can have dangerous implications, as

viewers  engage in similar behaviors in real life.  Strangulation has become normalized in a very dangerous way and is done often without understanding the potential for serious harm or fatality. The glamorization of such violence trivializes the severe consequences that can arise from strangulation, further embedding violent behavior into sexual norms.  Further,  when an abusive person uses the impediment of breath as a part of their abusive patterns,  this increases the odds of death by 7.5 times.  This is highly problematic because most responders do not have access to a forensic strangulation exam where evidence can be collected in cases of strangulation.

User-Uploaded Content and Acts of Violence

Most pornography platforms rely on user-uploaded content, leading to a significant risk of violent acts being normalized and disseminated. Many videos may depict actual acts of violence, coercion, and abuse, blurring the lines between fantasy and reality. This aspect poses a challenge for regulators and law enforcement, as it becomes difficult to monitor and control the content being shared.

Societal Implications: Racism, Sexism, and More

 Pornography does not exist in a vacuum; it reflects and perpetuates broader societal issues, including racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and anti-immigration attitudes. The portrayal of marginalized groups in degrading and violent manners reinforces harmful stereotypes and can lead to real-world discrimination and violence.
